The key talking points from the League Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea

Yesterday, Liverpool defeated Chelsea 11-10 on penalties at Wembley Stadium to claim the League Cup.

The Reds took the lead 67 minutes into the match via Joel Matip. However, VAR concluded that Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk impeded the play from an offside position prior to the centre-back finding the back of the net.

Therefore, the goal was disallowed. The game was level at 0-0 after extra-time, which meant a shootout was required to split the two teams.

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga missed from the spot to hand Liverpool the trophy. Below are some of the key talking points from the cup final.

The cup drought is over

Until yesterday, Liverpool had not won the League Cup since 2012. Kenny Dalglish's Reds team defeated Cardiff City 3-2 on penalties a decade ago.

But, the drought has now been put to bed. The League Cup is a brilliant trophy to win simply because it gives a squad a taste of success reasonably early on in the season.

Liverpool are still a decent chance of claiming the Premier League title. The Reds are six points behind league leaders Manchester City, but they do have a game in hand.

In terms of the Champions League, Liverpool possess a 2-0 lead over Inter Milan heading into the second leg of their last-16 tie, which will take place at Anfield.

Hopefully Jurgen Klopp's side can take some confidence from claiming the League Cup and win another trophy or two before the season concludes.

The penalty shootout was of the highest quality

You really do have to give credit to both sides. It looked like the shootout was never going to end.

The quality of the strikes from both sets of players meant that neither Caoimhin Kelleher or Kepa made a single save.

As we have already pointed out, Kepa's miss decided the shootout. You do have to feel for any goalkeeper in that situation.

Shot-stoppers aren't there to score. Sometimes they have no choice but to step up and take a penalty.

Luis Diaz was superb

Diaz has only been a Liverpool player for a month. But, there is no denying that winger has settled in quite quickly.

Diaz was given the opportunity to start against Chelsea yesterday. The Colombia international performed superbly.

Diaz didn't score or create a goal, but he simply looked to make things happen. He was causing the Chelsea defence a few problems.

Diaz registered four shots on goal during this 97-minute performance. We only expect the 25-year-old to improve over time. The reality is, Diaz is still new to English football.

Klopp's view on the match

Klopp made it clear that he was delighted to add another trophy to his collection. The German said that he did not care how his side won the game.

All Klopp wanted to see was his team lifting the trophy at the end of the match.

As quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, the 54-year-old told the club's official website following: "It didn't matter how we won today, we just had to win it. We have experience [in winning trophies] and that is massive. Chelsea started better but we got into the game."

Klopp has now won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, Premier League title and League Cup during his time in charge of Livepool (seven years).

A look to the future

Liverpool will face Norwich City at Anfield in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday night.

We do expect Klopp to make wholesale changes for the match. The reality is, most of his senior footballers were put through extra-time against Chelsea yesterday.

The Reds' clash against the Canaries will kick-off at 20:15 local time.
