The key talking points from Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Everton

Liverpool defeated Everton 2-0 at Anfield yesterday.

The Reds struggled to get going in the first-half. However, Liverpool were much improved in the second 45 minutes.

Andy Robertson gave the Reds the lead just beyond the hour mark. Divock Origi then secured the three points for Liverpool just before stoppage time.

Below are the key talking points from the Premier League clash.

Liverpool's mental strength came through

Everton made life difficult for Liverpool for the majority of the match. Frank Lampard's side looked to waste time whenever they could.

Everton were also quite aggressive without possession. But, Liverpool's mental strength came through in the end.

Despite everything that Everton did well during the game, they ultimately left Anfield with nothing.

Jurgen Klopp's substitutes/positional changes worked

The clash was still level at 0-0 after 60 minutes. But, Klopp decided to bring on both Luis Diaz and Divock Origi shortly after.

The Colombia international registered an assist and the Belgium forward found the back of the net.

Klopp also made an in-game change or two in the second-half. For example, right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold wasn't given a license to play with as much freedom as he normally would because of the threat that Anthony Gordon was offering on the counter-attack.

Klopp implied in his post-match press conference that the only way his team were defeating Everton is if they changed things up.

"To win the game you have to change things, that’s true," the German said, as quoted by the club's official website.

"I’m not sure it was brave. We tried to adapt as well in the protection because obviously Anthony (Gordon) was on his bike a couple of times and we cannot leave then Joel (Matip) constantly there alone. We told Trent (Alexander-Arnold) to play from a little bit deeper and we wanted Fabinho that side as well, so we knew where the threat is coming from but still could not always defend it in the first place.

"That’s how it is. If you don’t take risks you cannot win a football game, that’s how it is. It was obviously easy to improve today from the first-half and we did. That’s why it’s all good."

Robertson's attacking nature comes to fruition

Robertson is a defender by trade. But, there is no denying that the left-back is very good going forward.

As we have already pointed out, Robertson found the back of the net against Everton. The Scotland international has now scored seven goals and registered 52 assists in 217 appearances for Liverpool.

It is a luxury to have a defender who is capable of damaging the scoreboard.

The title race remains alive

It was an important Merseyside derby for both clubs. Liverpool are fighting for the title and Everton are looking to avoid relegation.

Therefore, it was never going to be an easy clash, which made the victory all the more sweeter. Liverpool are only one-point behind league leaders Manchester City.

The Citizens are obviously still the favourites for the title. With that being the case, all Liverpool can do is continue to win their remaining games and hope for the best.

However, former Red Jamie Carragher is confident that Manchester City could drop some points in their upcoming fixtures.

As quoted by The Mirror, the Scouser told Sky Sports the following: "Something could happen in the next league game... I do look at the next couple of games, as I said with Everton, if Liverpool can stay in the same position getting into West Ham for Man City, it looks more favourable in Liverpool."

We do hope that Carragher is correct. But, only time will tell if Liverpool are to conquer England this season.
