The final take from Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Watford

Liverpool defeated Watford 2-0 at Anfield last Saturday.

Diogo Jota and Fabinho (penalty) were the Reds' goalscorers on the day. Below is Anfield Watch's final take from the Premier League fixture.

The result keeps Liverpool alive in the title race

Because of the title race, it was a nervy game to watch for anyone supporting Liverpool. The Reds went into the match one-point behind league leaders Manchester City.

However, as we have stated, Liverpool managed to get the job done against the Hornets.

After beating Watford last Saturday, Jurgen Klopp's side did temporarily jump into first-place on the table. But, the Citizens defeated Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor later on in the afternoon.

After 30 Premier League fixtures, Manchester City have accumulated 73 points. Liverpool on the other hand have won 72 points after 30 games.

Pep Guardiola's side will welcome Klopp's team to the Etihad next Sunday in what could be the title decider.

Scratchy performance

Liverpool were far from their best against Watford last weekend. They simply lacked end product for most of the match. But, when you are in the middle of a title race, it does not matter how you win.

Post-game, Klopp seemed quite content in regards to his team's performance against the Hornets.

"These (tight) games can go either way; if you score early, really early, then just get in kind of a flow, it can go in one direction," the German told the club's official website.

"But it’s not very likely, it’s really unlikely that after the international break you see the best game of the season. So we had to work through this game against a very well-organised Watford side.

"Roy (Hodgson) is doing a really incredible job. After (going) 1-0 down, nothing changed, going for counter-attacks. When the players came on, going for counter-attacks. It makes it uncomfortable.

"We had in the first half obviously the one scary moment when Alisson had this incredible save.

"But we scored our goal, nice, and kept it controlled, which is the most important thing.

"Scoring the second was obviously kind of a relief. Winning the game is all we wanted, the boys delivered and so now we can carry on."

We completely agree with Klopp on it being a relief when Fabinho scored (89 minutes) from the penalty spot. A 1-0 lead never brings a sense of comfort. Everyone inside the ground relaxed after the Brazilian scored.

Jota continued his good form

Jota is having a decent season. The forward gave Liverpool the lead against Watford with a deft header.

Jota has scored 20 goals and registered three assists in 40 appearances for the Reds this season. With that being the case, every time the Portugal international takes to the field, we are confident that he can have an impact on the game.

We can't help but feel Jota will have a big say in regards to where the 2021-22 Premier League title ends up.

Mohamed Salah was lucklustre

We certainly aren't here to criticise Salah. The Egyptian international has been superb for Liverpool since joining the club from Roma back in the summer of 2017.

However, Salah was off the pace against Watford.  The winger registered a WhoScored player rating of 6.38 for his 69-minute performance against the Hornets.

Salah did have a tough international break. Egypt failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, so he is probably feeling a bit flat as a result.

We are right behind Salah and hopefully he returns to his best in the near future.

Champions League on the horizon for Liverpool

Liverpool will face Benfica in the Champions League quarter-finals this week (first leg). The clash will take place at the Estadio da Luz.

It will be interesting to see how Klopp sets out his side against Benfica with the massive Premier League fixture against Manchester City taking place five days later.

The German is not short of quality players, so we do expect him to field a strong team for both matches.
