"That’s what they missed" - Ian Wright on Liverpool's display against Palace
Pundit Ian Wright has given his opinion on Liverpool's display against Crystal Palace at Anfield yesterday.
The Reds secured a 1-1 draw against the Eagles. Wilfried Zaha gave Crystal Palace the lead during the first half.
However, Luis Diaz found the back of the net during the second half to make sure Liverpool walked away with a point.
Wright believes that the Reds seriously missed Thiago Alcantara against Crystal Palace.
"Getting the ball through midfield, I think they’re struggling with that. Harvey Elliott didn’t have any space to really move in," he told the Liverpool Echo, as quoted by AW on Twitter.
"To try and move the ball into areas where they can commit players in the middle and force their way in. Everything of Liverpool has to go out wide. Without Thiago, we see when Thiago’s not playing they’re not as potent.
"They need that midfielder to get the ball into areas where they commit players. That’s what they missed tonight.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
Wright is correct. Liverpool's midfielders didn't really offer anything going forward against Crystal Palace.
Thiago suffered a hamstring injury against Fulham at Craven Cottage just over a week ago. So, the Spaniard was unavailable for the Premier League clash against the Eagles.
Liverpool certainly missed Thiago against Crystal Palace. As Wright said, the Reds are less potent when the midfielder is not playing.
It was reported last week that Thiago will miss over a month of football, which is far from ideal.
Liverpool are going to have to find a way to deal without the 31-year-old for the time being.
