Commentator Andy Townsend waxed lyrical about Joe Gomez's assist against Rangers at the Ibrox Stadium last night.

During the second half, the Liverpool right-back played a superb ball into the path of teammate Roberto Firmino.

The Brazilian found the back of the net. Townsend was quick to praise Gomez on commentary as a result.

“Roberto Firmino points where he wants it,” he told CBS Sports on Paramount+, as quoted by HITC.

“Telling Joe Gomez ‘now, put it in there’ and it’s absolutely timed to perfection with his run.

“It’s a brilliant cross. It’s a stunning ball in from Joe Gomez. All the pace that you need.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Liverpool's first-choice right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered an injury against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.

With that being the case, Gomez was given the chance to start against Rangers. The England international did not disappoint.

Gomez registered a WhoScored player rating of 7.17 for his display against Rangers. The defender looked composed right throughout the match.

Alexander-Arnold on the other hand has been all at sea in the early stages of the 2022-23 campaign.

Therefore, if Gomez can continue playing well, the Scouser might have a bit of a battle to get back into Jurgen Klopp's starting XI.

Competition for places is healthy. It forces everyone to improve on aspects of their game.
