Steven Gerrard reacts to idea of Mohamed Salah to Saudi Arabia transfer

Steven Gerrard has said he doesn't want to see Mohamed Salah join him in Saudi Arabia.

Salah became the latest Liverpool player linked with a big-money move to the newly wealthy Saudi Pro League this week, when rumours circulated about an offer from Al Ittihad – Fabinho's new club.

The forward's agent, Ramy Abbas, quickly shot down talk that his client could leave Anfield this summer, but Salah – arguably the Arab world's biggest sporting star – is likely to remain a target for the government-backed league in future windows.

Al Ettifaq manager Gerrard, however, doesn't want to see Salah leave Liverpool for the Pro League.

The Reds legend – with a smile on his face – reasoned that Salah is his favourite player and he would prefer the forward to keep winning trophies with Liverpool, rather than sign for Al Ettifaq or another Saudi club.

In a video clip circulating on Twitter, Gerrard responded to a reporter asking if he would he like to see Salah come to Saudi Arabia: "No. The answer is no, because Mohamed Salah is my favourite player. I love Liverpool Football Club, so Mohamed can stay where he is."

Pressed on the matter, Gerrard did add a caveat.

"When he wins more leagues and more Champions Leagues with Liverpool, we'll maybe consider it," he added.

Though Gerrard may not want to deprive Liverpool fans of Salah just yet, he had no such issue in signing the Reds' captain Jordan Henderson for £12m this summer.

The 33-year-old joined Roberto Firmino and Fabinho as well as former Liverpool favourite Sadio Mane in Saudi Arabia, while Luis Diaz and Thiago have also been linked with moves – though those appear unlikely.

Salah has less than two years remaining on his current contract. In the coming months, the Reds' hierarchy will be forced into making a big decision on the future of the club's record Premier League goalscorer.
