Steven Gerrard on what advice Jurgen Klopp had for him going into management

Aston Villa's manager Steven Gerrard has revealed what Liverpool's manager Jurgen Klopp said to him before he went into management.

Speaking to Liverpool Echo, as cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, the former Liverpool captain revealed that Klopp told him not to be the footballer Steven Gerrard when going into management.

"His [Jurgen Klopp] advice to me was: 'Don't go in with the name on your back. I've seen so many ex-players who played at a decent level just automatically think that they can become a good coach or a good manager.'

"He said 'It's important that you go and do two years with Liverpool's youth teams away from the cameras, go and make mistakes, find out how you want to play, try formations, try tactics.'

"He said 'work out what team of people you need around you because you'll be good in some areas, you won't be good in others and get your team. Then you will know. You'll get the right feeling - then an opportunity will come. Then you can decide what you want to do.'"

Anfield Watch Verdict

Klopp is going to be a massive part of Gerrard's career, even just from the sidelines. Stevie has really taken on the German's advice and his success at Rangers’ is proof of that.

Even though he's only been at Villa a few months, you can already see the impact that he is making and the fans are right behind his project.

One day Gerrard will return to Anfield but at the moment everyone is happy where they are. Klopp at Anfield, Gerrard at Villa Park and most importantly the fans - who are happy with their current managers.
