Steven Gerrard labels Liverpool midfielder as a "manager's dream"
Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has labelled Liverpool midfielder James Milner as a "manager's dream".
The former Red recently praised Aston Villa defender Ashley Young for his professionalism. Whilst doing so, Gerrard decided to compare the 36-year-old to Milner.
“He’s [Young] a player who can come in and do any job on a football pitch,” the Scouser told the Birmingham Mail.
“There aren’t many people who can do that, especially at his age as well. He’s one of a few, like James Milner who are a manager’s dream.
“Certain situations crop up where you need someone to come in and do a certain type of job. It doesn’t matter whether it’s on the left, the right, in the middle, in attack, it doesn’t matter what you ask them to do, they just carry it out."
Anfield Watch Verdict
Milner has been a superb player for Liverpool over the years. Since joining the club from Manchester City on a free transfer back in 2015, the midfielder has gone on to score 26 goals and register 44 assists in 279 appearances for the Reds' first-team
Milner has also won the two biggest trophies in club football with Liverpool - the UEFA Champions League and Premier League title.
In terms of Gerrard's comments, we completely agree. Milner is a manager's dream simply because he can play in a number of different positions.
Under Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, the Englishman has played in defence, midfield and attack. He is very much a utility.
Milner's contract expires at the end of the season. It has been reported that Klopp would like to retain the 36-year-old.
We would love to see Milner remain at Liverpool for another season. He has made 29 appearances for the Reds this season, which highlights that he is still fit enough to play at the highest level.
Only time will tell where Milner's future lies.
