Stan Collymore wants 26-year-old Liverpool player to be given a new contract at Anfield
Former Liverpool forward Stan Collymore believes that the club should offer Reds striker Divock Origi a new contract.
The Belgium international's current deal expires at the conclusion of the 2021-22 campaign. With that being the case, Origi will be able to depart the club on a free transfer next summer.
However, Collymore would like to see Liverpool act and offer the 26-year-old a new deal.
Collymore told the Empire of the Kop the following: “If you look at it in the round, in a squad sense – yes, he does [deserve a new contract].
“This is a lad that scored a goal in the Champions League final.
“This is a player that when I first heard about him and the rumours about Liverpool, I was quite strident on social media, saying, ‘get him, take him, he’ll go on’.”
The 50-year-old further added: “If Divock Origi feels a part of the squad and feels he can win trophies and, more importantly, he and Jurgen Klopp feel he can contribute to the team moving forward – then it makes perfect sense for him to have another contract.”
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
We like Origi as a player. The striker has never been a regular for Liverpool.
In Origi's seven years at Anfield, he has only made 166 appearances for the club's first-team.
But, as Collymore has pointed out, the Belgium international is capable of scoring some pretty handy goals. In fact, Origi has found the back of the net 39 times for the Reds' first-team.
The forward adds quality and depth to Liverpool's squad.
Therefore, we would love to see the club offer Origi a new contract. But, only time will tell where his future lies.
