"Someone at my club" - Phil Thompson believes Harvey Elliott could go to the World Cup

Former Liverpool player Phil Thompson believes that England boss Gareth Southgate might consider selecting Reds midfielder Harvey Elliott in his World Cup squad.

The World Cup will kick-off in late November. Therefore, the major tournament is only months away from beginning.

With that being the case, Southgate would be in the process of selecting his squad for the World Cup.

Thompson has outlined why the Three Lions coach might consider picking Elliott.

As quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter, he told Paddy Power the following: "Someone at my club, he (Southgate) might look at is Harvey Elliott, he’s creative and has the ability to open up defences.

“I think Southgate will look to bring through some younger players. I know we all scoffed at it when they called up Theo Walcott in (Sven-Goran) Eriksson's 2006 World Cup squad, but I think there’s a place for these young players.

“And I think players like that - that have a great assist ratio, with that knack for creating goal – can take that forward onto the big stage.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We would be surprised if Elliott was selected in England's World Cup squad. The reality is, the midfielder is yet to make his debut for the senior national side.

There are a number of names ahead of Elliott in the pecking order.

Also, Elliott is still a very inexperienced player. He has only made 20 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.

So, we aren't expecting to see Elliott at the the World Cup this year. However, the 19-year-old's time will eventually come.

On another note, hopefully Elliott can have a solid pre-season with Liverpool and hit the ground running when the club season gets underway.
