Sofyan Amrabat, the Morocco midfielder who was believed to be a Liverpool target, "prefers" a move to the Spanish capital and to Atletico Madrid.

The 26-year-old defensive midfielder, who was one of the stand-out players from the tournament as he helped his country to the semi-finals, has seen his stock risen since that tournament with plenty of clubs interested in the Fiorentina man.

But a report from Spanish/French journalist Santi Aouna says the midfielder would prefer to join Diego Simeone's side in La Liga.

A FALTERING ATLETI OVER LIVERPOOL?

Morocco shocked a lot of people at the Qatar World Cup as they became the first ever African side to reach the semi-finals making it a landmark achievement in the game for Africa as a whole. Whilst players such as Paris Saint Germain's Achraf Hakimi and Sevilla's duo of Yassine Bounou and Youssef En-Nesyri contributed massively, Fiorentina's Amrabat played a massive part.

Liverpool seem to be interested or targeting a lot of midfield players, which is an area they desperately need to improve and Amrabat joins a midfield list of Liverpool targets which so far has included Moises Caicedo, Jude Bellingham and Enzo Fernandez.

But Amrabat's decision to prefer a move to a faltering Atletico Madrid side who have not set the world alight this season is an intriguing one nevertheless.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Amrabat is someone who I think would improve Liverpool's midfield massively. It may not be the stand out name like Jude Bellingham or the exciting prospect in Moises Caicedo - but Liverpool new new faces in midfield as that's the area that they are getting exposed in games. Amrabat I feel would also benefit Fabinho, who to me looks tired and is not the defensive midfielder he used to be when he first signed. It's still bizarre why Amrabat would prefer a move to a faltering Atletico Madrid though in my opinion.
