Sergio Aguero tips Darwin Nunez to justify Liverpool's £64m transfer fee
Sergio Aguero knows a thing or two about finding the back of the net with regularity and he believes it's just a matter of time before Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez starts doing the same.
The former Manchester City star netted 184 times in the Premier League, placing him fifth in the all-time list, during a successful period at the Etihad Stadium, scoring at least 20 goals or more across all competitions in all but two of his 10 seasons.
Such efficiency in front of goal is something that Nunez hasn't quite grasped since joining the Reds from Benfica two summers ago for an initial £64million fee that could eventually rise to £85m if certain conditions are met.
Whilst the Uruguay international is very much a fan favourite and has struck a respectable 33 goals in 96 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool, that return could, perhaps should, have been far greater given the number of chances he spurns.
But Aguero has given supporters reasons to be encouraged with regard to Nunez becoming a prolific goalscorer in the future.
"Credit where credit's due – I do. He's a dangerous player that’s always prowling the goalposts," Aguero said, as per TeamTalk.
"Each season, he refines his game… and as long as he doesn't let the anxiety of a dry spell get to him, Darwin will be a prolific goalscorer in due time.
"Darwin needs time to solidify, and sooner or later, he'll get there."
Slot's plan for Nunez revealed
Despite having played on the left wing for both club and country in the past 12 months, new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is reportedly far more encouraged by what he sees from Nunez as being 'an out-and-out centre-forward'.
Going by this report, Nunez will be battling the likes of Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo - assuming the Reds do not sign a central striker before the summer transfer window - to lead the line during the 2024/25 season and it remains to be seen if he can prove Aguero right.
