In the wake of some indifferent recent form, Liverpool's Darwin Nunez has received support from a man who knows a thing or two about finding the back of the net: former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

Speaking to Stake.com, the legendary forward praised the growing influence of Nunez on the Reds and claimed that the Uruguayan is "on his way" to being considered one of the greatest forwards in his country's history.

The Argentinian's remarks came in the wake of Uruguay's stunning victory against Brazil in World Cup qualification, a match that saw Nunez bag the opening goal - a chance he took "very well", according to Agüero.

Nunez's performance in that game caught the attention of Aguero, who highlighted the striker's exceptional form: "He is in great form - well on his way to be placed among the best of the best Uruguayan forwards in history, with [Edinson] Cavani and [Luis] Suarez."

Legendary forwards

Both Cavani and Suarez have been linchpins for the Uruguayan national team for over a decade. For Nunez to be spoken about in the same breath as such celebrated figures in Uruguayan football history underscores the magnitude of Aguero's appraisal of Nunez's burgeoning talent.

Renowned for his striking prowess and relentless work ethic, Cavani carved a reputation as a complete forward, scoring goals for fun for clubs such as Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain. His strength, aerial ability and consistent performances made him a valuable asset throughout his lengthy career. In fact, he's still performing at a high level now, at the age of 36, with Boca Juniors.

Suarez, meanwhile, is no stranger to Liverpool fans. After joining from Ajax, he took the Premier League by storm with his tenacity and knack for spectacular goals (82 in 133 appearances). This earned him a move to Barcelona, where he formed a formidable attacking trio with Lionel Messi and Neymar, winning numerous titles, including the Champions League.

His success continued at Atlético Madrid, where, despite his advancing years, he still contributed significantly to their La Liga triumph.

A long way to go

Clearly, Nunez has a long way to go to match these two, but after a season of adaptation following his move from Benfica in the summer of 2022, the Reds' number nine is starting to make an impact with greater regularity.

So far this campaign, he has already scored seven and assisted seven as he leads the line for Jurgen Klopp's side.
