Senior Liverpool players unhappy with club over Jurgen Klopp decision

The Athletic's David Ornstein has hinted at the fact that some of Liverpool's senior players were not overly pleased with the short notice they were given regarding Jurgen Klopp's exit.

It was only a week to the day that Jurgen Klopp announced he would be leaving the Reds at the end of the season, bringing a sensational Anfield career to an unexpected end.

The club put out an interview with the 56-year-old on social media without warning that explained Klopp's decision to step down, with the announcement coming as an enormous surprise to the football world.

Klopp confirmed that he had communicated his decision to leave to the club's hierarchy back in November 2023, but the Liverpool first-team players were not told until last Friday, shortly before the official announcement.

According to Ornstein, some of the club's players were not too happy with the decision to give them such short notice of Klopp's departure, especially given how long the club had known about the situation.

Ornstein stated: "This news hit them like a bolt out of the blue from what we hear. They didn’t have any advance warning.

"I’ve had suggestions that not all of the senior players were particularly happy about that, but I guess when you’re in Liverpool, and Jurgen Klopp’s shoes, you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t."

It would have been of paramount importance to Liverpool that the news of Klopp's exit was not to be leaked, with the club controlling when and how the announcement was made to the public.

Therefore, it's understandable that the club's hierarchy kept this information to themselves, even if players felt blindsided by the shocking news.

Liverpool are currently in the hunt for Klopp's successor and the senior players will be eagerly awaiting news of who will be their next boss.

Xabi Alonso is the current front-runner for the position, while the likes of Roberto De Zerbi and Julian Nagelsmann have also been linked.
