Gravenberch ADMITS problems with his new role
Ryan Gravenberch has rightly been winning a ton of plaudits for his new No.6 role, but he is patently aware of his own shortcomings.
The Dutchman was speaking in an interview with the Daily Mail, which has been earning almost as much attention as his on-pitch exploits.
Gravenberch said: “[So far this season] feels good but to be honest I have to adapt more because I'm not like a natural defending No 6.
“I was like a more attacking midfielder so for myself I have to adapt more. I think the first games have been really good but I have to keep improving.”
It’s verging on shocking to hear Gravenberch not describe himself as a natural given how incredibly quickly he has emerged as one of Europe’s best in the position so far this season. It could well be that he has been a natural all along, and just not realised it.
Credit to the coaching staff
Credit needs to be given to Arne Slot in particular for recognising Gravenberch had the ability to adapt to a deeper role, and it’s not just Slot that has been helping him with the transition to No.6.
Former Everton man John Heitinga has been hands-on in training, with Gravenberch saying:
“He showed me a few clips and John - I had him in Ajax so he knows me really well - I had chats with him about good positioning, where the ball can come and also about attacking wise where I have to stand.”
What could Gravenberch’s potential ceiling be?
He mentions former Dutch legend Clarence Seedorf as an inspiration and “idol”, and whilst those are lofty comparisons age is very much on Gravenberch’s side.
The comparisons aren’t helped by the fact that Gravenberch broke the youngest-player record at Ajax held by Seedorf.
Early days, yes, but Gravenberch is clearly starting to flourish in the No.6 role which he couldn’t see himself playing mere months ago.
