Roberto Firmino and Fabinho return to Anfield for Newcastle clash
There will be two familiar faces in the crowd at Anfield tonight as Roberto Firmino and Fabinho return to their former stomping ground to witness the Reds' New Year's Day clash against Newcastle.
Firmino and Fabinho, currently plying their trade in the Saudi Pro League, took advantage of the break in action to return to their former home.
Amid the familiar Merseyside rain, the returning legends were greeted warmly, posing for photographs with supporters and former teammates, including Thiago.
While Firmino's presence in Liverpool was expected - he has a book signing event in the city for 'Si Senor' on 5 January - Fabinho's unexpected appearance underscored his enduring affection for the club and the city that served as his home during five trophy-laden seasons.
Middle Eastern contingent
Since moving to Al-Ahli, currently placed third in the Saudi Pro League, things haven't gone totally to plan for Firmino, who played for the Reds between 2015 and 2023.
Speculation continues to swirl around his future, with rumours already linking him with a departure.
Meanwhile, Fabinho continues to be a linchpin for Al-Ittihad, having made 21 appearances as the side sit in seventh place.
The Middle East has become a popular new destination for a number of former Liverpool stars, including the Brazilian duo, plus Sadio Mane, Gini Wijnaldum and former captain Jordan Henderson.
Whether we see any of these return to Merseyside before the Saudi Pro League resumes in February remains to be seen.
