Robbie Fowler reveals what Darwin Nunez must change to score more Liverpool goals
Iconic Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has admitted that Darwin Nunez is a frustrating player to watch and has advised the Uruguayan on what he needs to do to score more goals.
Nunez took time to settle on Merseyside after his lucrative switch from Benfica in the summer of 2022, but has really come into his own for the Reds this season.
The 24-year-old has 22 goal contributions in all competitions this term and was in the thick of the action during Liverpool's 4-1 demolition of Chelsea on Wednesday evening.
The South American caused the Blues backline all manner of problems, finishing the match with a staggering 11 shots - eight more than any other player on the pitch.
Despite the volume of efforts, Nunez didn't manage to get his name on the scoresheet against Chelsea, hitting the woodwork a Premier League record four times, including from the penalty spot.
Legendary Liverpool forward Fowler admitted after the match that Nunez needs to start scoring more goals for the Reds and gave him some advice to help him boost his output.
Asked whether Nunez excites or frustrates him on TNT Sports, Fowler said: "A bit of both in all fairness because obviously, being a striker, I want them to score goals.
"I want a team [that I support] to win games, I want the striker to be the man who scores everything. But you look at him and he does have chances, I think he had 11 or 12 shots today and he hit the woodwork four times."
Quizzed on what Nunez needs to do to increase his goal tally, Fowler replied: "He looks as though he rushes everything, in all fairness. I think you look at him in the first 15 minutes [against Chelsea], a lot of his shots were from outside the box, so he is trying to feel his way into the game.
"But he just needs to calm himself down in front of goal a little bit."
Fowler added: "I think there comes a point where you can't be raw all the time. I mean 'Captain Chaos'...he is a handful we all know that.
"But there comes a point where you can't be classed as a raw centre-forward. He's been here for 18 months now and he will score goals and he will be a handful, but there's got to be a point where you've got to be a little more clinical."
Nunez continues to find himself in glorious goalscoring opportunities, as well as being an immense creative force, but he is still far from ruthless in front of goal.
In fact, the former Benfica man has underperformed his Premier League expected goals by 6.63 this season, meaning his tally should be closer to 13 in the division despite it currently sitting at seven.
However, Nunez's pace, athleticism and eagerness to run beyond centre-backs has opened up a lot of defences for Liverpool, with his influence in the final third unquestionable.
