Robbie Fowler confirms plans to have Sven-Goran Eriksson manage Liverpool

Robbie Fowler has reaffirmed his intentions to get Sven-Goran Eriksson in the dugout for the Liverpool Legends game against Ajax in March.

Eriksson announced earlier this month that he has terminal pancreatic cancer, admitting he has at best a year to live.

It was a revelation that stunned the footballing world, with the Swede having had a glittering managerial career - most famously taking charge of the England national team between 2001 and 2006.

Despite reaching such high levels in the game, Eriksson revealed he still had one regret - not managing the team he grew up supporting, Liverpool.

“My father is still alive and is still a Liverpool supporter, and I’m a Liverpool supporter as well – I’ve always been," he told Sky News.

“So I always wished to be the manager of Liverpool, and that will not happen for sure, but I’m still a Liverpool fan."

In response to this, Liverpool fans campaigned in their masses to have Eriksson take charge for the annual legends match in March.

Reds icon Fowler initially acknowledged the movement on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating that the request has indeed been made to fulfil Eriksson's wish.

And now, writing in his column for the Mirror, the 48-year-old has confirmed that plans haven't changed, and that the club will do all they can to get Eriksson in the dugout against Ajax.

Fowler said: "When he revealed that it was always his ambition to manage the Reds and I was asked on my social media account if there was any possibility of him taking charge of the Legends' team for the game against Ajax in March, I gave the game away by replying that a call had already been made.

‌"It has - and I am sure Sir Kenny Dalglish will be only too willing to hand over the reins to Sven when we meet the Dutch giants."

However, Fowler has acknowledged that Eriksson's involvement will all depend on the Swede's health, admitting that his presence in the technical area is far from a guarantee.

"As with all the best-laid plans, there might be a problem or two," Fowler added.

"It all depends, of course, on whether Sven is well enough to travel to Merseyside to take his place in the Anfield dugout.

"He has also mentioned how he hopes to watch England play Brazil in a showpiece friendly at Wembley - scheduled for the same day.

"Hopefully, a solution can be found to make sure Sven can attend both games as the kick-off times are a few hours apart. But again, it has to be stressed, that his health will always come first."
