Rio Ferdinand names the team that fear Liverpool in Europe

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes that Manchester City would not want to face Liverpool in the knockout stages of the 2021-22 Champions League campaign.

The last-16 ties are coming to an end. Liverpool progressed to the quarter-finals by defeating Inter Milan 2-1 on aggregate.

Manchester City on the other hand secured progress to the last-eight by defeating Sporting Lisbon 5-0 on aggregate.

Despite the fact that the Citizens are a top side, Ferdinand is confident that they will not want to face the Reds in the knockout stages.

As quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, the Liverpool Echo has claimed that the Englishman said the following: “Liverpool would be the last team that Manchester City would want in the draw.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Liverpool have blown Manchester City (the current teams) away in Europe before.

The Reds faced the Citizens in the 2018 Champions League quarter-finals. Liverpool defeated Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate.

Therefore, we can see where Ferdinand is coming from. Perhaps the Citizens are slightly scarred from what happened four years ago.

Also, playing a knockout clash at Anfield is never easy for any opposition team. There is a reason why the crowd is known as the 12th man.

Back in 2019, former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane explained why the Anfield support is special.

"You often hear that you never see a supporter score a goal or make a tackle, but they do have a huge affect on their own team and on the opposition," the Irishman told Extra.ie Sport.

"It’s certainly one of the toughest places I’ve ever experienced to come and get a result."

The quarter-final draw will take place on March 18 and is set to begin at 11am UK time. We are looking forward to finding out who Liverpool will be playing.
