A report from The Times looking at the arrival of Ibrahima Konate has revealed that the Reds actually bid for Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car back in January of 2021.

Liverpool were in dire need of new defenders last season and midway through the campaign things were particularly tough.

Indeed, the late call was made in the January market to try and sign some new defenders with Ozan Kabak joining on loan and Ben Davies arriving for a small fee.

Caleta-Car could have also arrived, meanwhile, with the Reds apparently submitting a bid - though The Times reveals that had he even come to Liverpool they would have likely still pressed ahead with trying to sign Konate:

Anfield Watch Verdict

The January window of 2021 was certainly a dramatic and tense one, to say the least.

Liverpool saw injuries to Fabinho and Joel Matip come during that month and that left us incredibly short at the back, sparking a flurry to make a couple of signings.

Indeed, Kabak and Davies arrived but so too could have Caleta-Car, had things gone slightly differently.

In the end, though, he did not turn up on Merseyside and we have since signed Konate who looks a real find.
