"Rediscovered his best form" - John Aldridge on TAA playing in midfield for Liverpool
Liverpool legend John Aldridge believes Trent Alexander-Arnold has the skill set to flourish in midfield after his stunning performance in the Reds' 6-1 demolition of Leeds United. The England international was in sublime form as he notched up two assists at Elland Road to cap off a sensational display away from home.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge lavished praise on the England international and also singled out Curtis Jones for special praise.
"We have problems in midfield, and can Trent play there? Absolutely. We have seen in the last couple of games the damage he can cause in this position.
"Maybe the manager is looking at what’s happening with Jude Bellingham and thinking of alternative solutions. If Trent loses a tackle in midfield, he is not going to get found out as much compared to if the same thing happens at right-back.
"What we have learned is Alexander-Arnold can play the inverted full-back role ridiculously well and has bounced back in style after what has been a challenging few months for him. He has got so much going for him.
"I'm glad he appears to have rediscovered his best form. Great players can have dips, but they always come back. Another player who caught my eye against Leeds was Curtis Jones, who was handed a third successive start and let loose by the manager.
"What Jurgen is doing is having a look at what can work ahead of next season - maybe he and Trent are in his thinking for the midfield. Before we went a goal up, Jones was probably our best player on the pitch at Leeds."
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
Trent is clearly a gifted footballer and has all the necessary tools to flourish in midfield for Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp still needs to go out and buy a couple of new players who can come in and immediately run the show for us in the middle.
Additionally, if Trent were to play in midfield permanently, Liverpool would need to dip into the transfer market to buy a quality right back, which would be an arduous task considering the lack of quality and value in that position currently. That said, TAA's ability to play in midfield makes Liverpool a lot more unpredictable. Judging by Klopp's comments, he will be deployed in that position whenever the situation calls for it in the future.
