Pundits in disbelief after 'lucky' Man City escape late penalty against Liverpool

Liverpool fans were left in disbelief at the fact Michael Oliver failed to award what seemed a blatant penalty in the final minute of their contest with Manchester City.

Into the eighth minute of added time, Jeremy Doku's high tackle caught Alexis Mac Allister in the chest, with pundits expecting the referee to point to the spot.

However, after a short VAR check, it was deemed that Doku had played the ball - despite the fact there was very little evidence in support of this.

"He's a lucky, lucky boy," Gary Neville said on Sky Sports commentary.

It would prove pivotal as the clash ended in a 1-1 draw, allowing Arsenal to finish the weekend at the top of the table.

Liverpool found themselves behind in the first half, with John Stones squeezing the ball home from a well-worked Kevin De Bruyne corner.

However, the Reds came out swinging after the break, and were awarded a penalty when Darwin Nunez was hacked to the ground by Ederson.

Alexis Mac Allister duly converted the spot-kick to equalise - and from then on, Liverpool seemed like the team who would go on to get the winner.

Luis Diaz missed a trifecta of golden chances to put the Reds in front, dampening what was otherwise an electrifying performance from the Colombian.

But it would be the game's final event that would steal the headlines, with Doku producing a challenge similar to that of former City man Nigel de Jong in the 2010 World Cup final, only to go without caution.
