Roberto De Zerbi tipped to be next Liverpool boss for one reason

Graeme Souness believes Roberto De Zerbi could be the next Liverpool manager for one simple reason. The Brighton boss has been linked.

Liverpool finally have their sporting director and next on the agenda is finding a new manager. Several names have been linked since Jurgen Klopp announced he was stepping down at the end of the season.

One of the names immediately placed into the discussion was Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian has been very successful with Brighton since taking over last season, making him a candidate for top jobs all over Europe.

Though, the last month or so has seen De Zerbi fall down the perceived pecking order. Xabi Alonso tops it - but Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes the Brighton manager has a real chance of landing the job. Alonso, on the other hand, could be a struggle to hire.

“You look at Liverpool at the end of the season and you get that job, what a dream job that is,” Souness told TalkSport.

“Will he [De Zerbi] be in the frame? Yeah, because of the brand of football he plays, that will be attractive to people. Is Alonso the favourite? I believe he’s talking to Bayern Munich.”

Roberto De Zerbi and Liverpool

De Zerbi seems like a longshot at this point, given he hasn't had quite the same success as Alonso or Sporting's Ruben Amorim. It's part of the reason why the Athletic claim he's unlikely to even make the final shortlist at Anfield.

As Souness says, his style of play gets him into the discussion as it's what top clubs want right now. That and De Zerbi has managed to make it work in the Premier League with limited funds.

But when he can't fall back on concrete success at the top of the game, it makes hard for the 44-year-old to compete with some of the other names mentioned. Ultimately, we don't believe he'll become Liverpool boss. At the same time, you can't completely rule it out - however, it would take several other names to drop out of the running.
