Which players could Liverpool sell this summer?

Liverpool's much talked about summer rebuild is well underway.

The arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have taken the Reds spending to £95m, while more arrivals are expected in defence and midfield.

The Reds under FSG have never been a club that can simply spend without consequences, however, and incomings are just one side of a rebuild. Recent reports suggest more outgoings from the current squad may be necessary before any further deals are completed.

Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were all released on free transfers at the end of their contracts, while Fabio Carvalho (RB Leipzig), Calvin Ramsey (Preston) and Rhys Williams (Aberdeen) have been loaned out. But who else could still be sold or loaned before the summer transfer deadline passes on September 1?

Let's take a look.

Caoimhin Kelleher

Clubs linked: Brentford

At 24, Kelleher has just five professional league appearances to his name — amazingly, he has twice as many international caps for Ireland. While it would sadden many, it surprise nobody if the Reds' cup hero pushed to leave in order to further his career and become the established first choice somewhere.

Kostas Tsimikas

Clubs linked: None

The Greek Scouser said a tearful goodbye after the final game at Anfield of 2022/23, suggesting his time may be up. However, that has been disputed by one Greek journalist. If the Reds are to continue with their box midfield system, Tsimikas — whose game time is already limited — hardly fits into a back three. A clearly talented player and with a contract that has two more years to run, Tsimikas could earn Liverpool decent money with a sale.

Nat Phillips

Clubs linked: Leeds

It's a testament both to Phillips' resilience and Liverpool's lacklustre transfer activity that the Bolton-born centre back has lasted at Anfield as long as he has. While he's always given everything and his contribution in 2020/21 will be remembered gratefully, a departure now would make sense for all sides.

Sepp van den Berg

Clubs linked: Mainz, Schalke

The 21-year-old Dutchman impressed at Preston on loan before injury affected his time at doomed Schalke in 2022/23. Unlikely ever to trouble Klopp's first team, a sale now would make sense.

Luke Chambers

Clubs linked: Bayer Leverkusen, Watford, Sheffield Wednesday

A highly rated left back, a loan move for 19-year-old Chambers is on the cards rather than a sale. Xabi Alonso is among his fans.

Tyler Morton

Clubs linked: Southampton

Returning from an impressive loan spell at Blackburn, Morton may have expected to be integrated into the first team in other seasons. However, Liverpool's much publicised engine room upgrade makes that unlikely for 2023/24. The 20-year-old could be loaned again or sold outright, and will surely not be short of suitors. One report suggests he could even be a makeweight in a deal for Romeo Lavia.

Thiago Alcantara

Clubs linked: Galatasaray, Saudi Pro League

On £10m a year, frequently unavailable through injury and out of contract in a year, selling Thiago would be a no-brainer if he wasn't so damn good. If he does leave, it may be for the greater good.

Jordan Henderson

Clubs linked: Al-Ettifaq

Liverpool's club captain looked ready to serve in a diminished role next season, following the new arrivals. Could the 33-year-old be tempted with a big pay day and reunion with Steven Gerrard to end his career? Surely not.

Kaide Gordon

Clubs linked: None

The 18-year-old forward has missed the last 17 months with a rare pelvic issue, but is finally back training on grass. Tipped for big things before the injury — Gordon scored on his FA Cup debut against Shrewsbury and earned a Premier League cameo vs Brentford — a loan move may be sensible to get him back on track.
