Everton scored a 98th-minute equaliser through James Tarkowski and Slot was justifiably unhappy about it.
Firstly, the ball in appeared to catch Everton’s players offside. Then it appeared Beto fouled Ibrahima Konate in the build-up. And the fact that five minutes were indicated for added time - and not eight - will frustrate Slot as well as Liverpool’s supporters.
But Oliver was in no mood to discuss his decisions with the Liverpool boss. As Slot shook hands with the matchday official, he was caught on camera making a point to Oliver.
But rather than reply, the referee took a red card out of his pocket and opted to dismiss the Dutchman.
Now there is uncertainty over exactly what Slot’s punishment might be. It was initially speculated that he would miss two matches due to a touchline ban.
Beast Mode urges PGMOL to release audio
“Liverpool head coach Arne Slot was dismissed at the end of the Merseyside derby for using offensive, insulting, or abusive language. He is handed a two-match touchline ban as a result,” a Premier League statement read.
However according to the Athletic that statement was released in error and the league is STILL reviewing what actions to take. The statement has since been amended.
It’s still unclear exactly what Slot was sent off for; there have been amateur sleuths poring over footage to try to find offending language while some believe it was to do with the nature of Slot’s handshake.
Football League legend and Liverpool fan Adebayo Akinfenwa has now urged PGMOL to release the audio of the interaction between Arne Slot and Michael Oliver.
“What I'm curious about is Michael Oliver is wearing a mic,” he said in a video released on X. “So that means he must record the audio. So whoever the organisation is, just so it gives us a little bit more context, release the audio of why he sent off Slot.”
Slot was not the only Liverpool figure sent off on Wednesday night.
