Liverpool received an apology from PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) chief Howard Webb after Luis Diaz's first-half strike against Tottenham Hotspur was incorrectly ruled out for offside by VAR.

This comes after PGMOL acknowledged in an official statement after the game that a 'significant' human error had occurred after Diaz had the ball in the back of the net. The statement read: “PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool. The goal by Luiz Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. "This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene. PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error.” According to The Independent, Howard Webb issued an apology to the club after their long unbeaten run came to an unceremonious end at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. While Diaz's disallowed goal was the biggest talking point after the game, referee Simon Hooper's decision to send off Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota came under massive scrutiny. Jones initially received a yellow card for a challenge on Yves Bissouma, but Hooper consulted the pitchside monitor and decided to send off the English midfielder. On the other hand, Jota was sent off for two bookable offenses, the first of which was a questionable decision as footage later revealed that Tottenham's Destiny Udogie actually tripped himself. The Reds will be without Jones for three domestic games due to the fact that he received a straight red card, while Jota will miss just one game as he was given his marching orders for two bookable offenses. However, both players are expected to feature in midweek as Liverpool prepare to host Belgian Pro League club Union Saint-Gilloise in the UEFA Europa League.
