Peter Crouch names three Reds who should be in contention for Player of the Year

Former Red Peter Crouch believes that three Liverpool players are in contention to win the Player of the Year award.

Liverpool are having a very good season. The Reds have won the League Cup and could further claim the Premier League title, Champions League and FA Cup.

With that being the case, it would be fair to assume that some of Jurgen Klopp's players are in contention to win the Player of the Year award.

Crouch is under the impression that Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah could potentially take out the prize.

“This year, if Manchester City win the Premier League and Champions League, you would have to pick Phil Foden or Kevin De Bruyne. I’d potentially go for Foden because he has consistently been a shining light for them,” the Englishman wrote for the Daily Mail, as quoted by Sport Bible.

“There are plenty of others you could choose and the same goes for Liverpool.

“The performances of Virgil van Dijk have been an absolute joke. Sadio Mane as well, coming back from winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal and picking up where he left off. He has to be in the conversation.

“I do seem to be skirting around the fact that Mohamed Salah — already crowned FWA Footballer of the Year — has the most goals and assists this season.

“Clearly he has to be in there, given how electric he has been throughout the campaign, even allowing for him going off the boil slightly in recent weeks.”

Crouch further added: “Those five names are my list and it has to be one of them. If the two clubs trade trophies, Salah pips the others in my view for his sheer weight of goal contributions.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We do agree with Crouch that Salah has been the standout player for Liverpool this season. The winger has scored 30 goals and registered 14 assists in 45 appearances.

Salah has also been averaging a WhoScored player rating of 7.46 across the 2021-22 club campaign.

The aforementioned figures highlight that Salah has performed to a world-class level this season.

Therefore, we would not be shocked if the Egyptian international claimed another individual award in the coming months.

But, only time will tell if that is to be the case.
