Reporter Fabrizio Romano has named the player that he would like to see playing for Liverpool.

The journalist said that the Reds should be in the market for a new central midfielder.

With that being the case, Romano believes Sporting Lisbon's Matheus Nunes would be a good addition to Jurgen Klopp's squad.

“It’s gone quiet at Liverpool, as many expected, but if it were up to me I think I’d still be in the market for at least one more signing,” he wrote in his column on Caught Offside’s Substack.

“Personally, I’d sign a new central midfielder. Jurgen Klopp wanted Aurelien Tchouameni when he was at Monaco and held some talks over the deal, but the player preferred Real Madrid.

“I think another midfielder could help Liverpool, a player like Matheus Nunes, a talented 23-year-old from Sporting Lisbon, would be a smart idea. But Liverpool always think long-term and I’m sure they will invest in a midfielder in 2023.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Nunes is quite a talented player. The midfielder averaged a WhoScored player rating of 7.08 across 33 league appearances last season.

So, Nunes would be a fine addition to Jurgen Klopp's squad.

However, it is hardly the end of the world if Liverpool don't sign a midfielder this summer.

The reality is, Klopp possesses a number of midfielders in his squad (Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones).

Liverpool will be able to cope without Nunes this season. But, there will come a time when the Reds will have to invest in their midfield.

Henderson and Thiago are in their 30s. They can't represent the club forever.
