Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has provided fitness updates on the Reds' injured stars Trent Alexander-Arnold and Thiago Alcantara.

24-year-old Alexander-Arnold suffered a hamstring injury in the Reds' 3-0 victory over Aston Villa prior to the international break, while Thiago has not featured at all since last season, as he continues a slow recovery from a hip issue.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool's third-round Carabao Cup clash with Leicester City, Lijnders revealed that Alexander-Arnold has returned to team training, while he also praised Joe Gomez's contribution at right back in the vice-captain's recent absence.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Lijnders said: "Trent trained yesterday with us but it was just in the rondo and the ball possession with the counter-pressing, but he was outstanding.

"You see him instantly, of course. He is with the team training, I am not sure if he will be ready, we will see today.

"But then if we speak about Trent we have to make a compliment to Joe Gomez because the way he played the role, played the role in his way but still being able to come inside as well, was just incredible. His level and attitude, just a big compliment to him because you are replacing one of the best full-backs in the world.

“He did really, really well. That’s good and shows a lot about our squad as well, that we can have that."

Meanwhile, Lijnders was coy on the fitness of Liverpool's other major injured star, Thiago, simply stating that his rehabilitation is going 'well'.

He added: "He is in a good way, the healing process is going well so that’s the most important [thing] at this moment."

Thiago, who is in the final year of his Liverpool contract, last started a game for the Reds in the 3-0 defeat to Wolves back in February.
