He leaves with Salzburg sitting in fifth place in the Austrian Bundesliga, ten points behind the league leaders.

Meanwhile, in the Champions League the club are in 32nd position and look doomed to be eliminated from the competition.

Things have not transpired in the way Lijnders will have wanted at Salzburg. He's been robbed of a reunion with his former boss Jurgen Klopp, who is set to join Red Bull in January.

But he might be set for an entirely different reunion with one of his former players. So just what exactly could be Lijnders' next step?

Why Pep Lijnders could be set for Naby Keita reunion

Looking around the job market in European football there aren't many vacancies left for Lijnders to take especially after his reputation has taken a massive hint.

Being fired so quickly at Salzburg will make it difficult for Lijnders to find another job.

But there is one club who could be an ideal destination for the Liverpool man, where one former and now struggling Reds star is already looking to make a stunning return.

That place is Ferencvaros, of course. Keita has just moved to the Hungarian giants, where he will be looking to get his career back on track and use the winter break as an opportunity to get himself match fit again after a disappointing year at Werder Bremen.

Ferencvaros' current manager Pascal Jansen hasn't really hit the ground running. He is actually Arne Slot's former assistant from their AZ Alkmaar days.

Jansen arrived with a lot of expectations in the summer but currently Ferencvaros are only second in the league table (which is a disappointing start considering they've won every campaign since the 2018/19 season) and have suffered a humiliating 5-0 demolition in the Europa League away to PAOK.

The pressure is on Jansen to keep his job and the winter break could provide Ferencvaros with an opportunity to start anew.

With Lijnders now being on the market, he is an intriguing target for someone like Ferencvaros. Despite his failures at Salzburg, his pedigree at having been an understudy to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool for many years is second to none.

Ferencvaros' sporting director Tamas Hajnal is also on good terms with Klopp, having consulted with him over the transfer of Keita recently.

Brining Lijnders in could also in turn provide the best possible opportunity to get the best out of Keita, with the Dutchman having worked with him for years at Anfield.

For Lijnders working at Ferencvaros, who are still looking on course to qualify to the knock-out round of the Europa League, could be an opportunity to redeem himself.

It could be a match written in the stars.
