Paul Scholes lauds five leaders within Liverpool dressing room

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has lauded five players within the Liverpool dressing room for their leadership skills.

After the Reds defeated the Red Devils 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday night, the 47-year-old spoke about the lack of leadership within Ralf Rangnick's team.

When doing so, Scholes said that Liverpool possess five players that lead the way on and off the football pitch.

“We talk about leaders in the Manchester United group, I can’t think of any,” he told Premier League Productions (19/04/22 at 10:15 pm). “There’s none that stand out.

“You look at this Liverpool team. James Milner, not even playing. Jordan Henderson. (Virgil) Van Dijk, (Joel) Matip and Fabinho. They are all leaders. Men. They are real men. A real man’s team.

“I remember Sir Alex (Ferguson) saying, the hardest part of his job was getting towards the end of the season and leaving really good players out of big games. And this manager has the same to deal with.

“But it’s down to Jordan (Henderson), who can realise one of the lads is upset. A bit down. Would he then cause a bit of trouble in the squad? I think it’s up to those characters to make sure they don’t do that. And Liverpool have that type of character and leader in abundance.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Scholes is spot on. The players that he mentioned are all terrific role models within the Liverpool dressing room.

The reality is, football sides are dysfunctional without a group of players setting the right standards.

As Scholes implied, you only have to look at Manchester United. The Red Devils are a side severely lacking guidance, which is a key reason why they are not even sitting inside the top-four (Premier League).

We should not be taking the current set of players at Liverpool for granted. They are brilliant footballers, but they are also people who strive to be the best.

That is why the Reds have been challenging for trophies in recent seasons.
