Opta supercomputer updates Liverpool's title chances after Burnley win
The fabled Opta supercomputer has updated its predictions on where Liverpool will finish this season following the Reds' 2-0 victory over Burnley on Boxing Day.
Gameweek 19 has now passed us by in the Premier League and Liverpool are the ones sat at the top of the tree post Christmas thanks to West Ham United's victory against Arsenal on Thursday and the Reds' exploits at Turf Moor two days prior.
Liverpool find themselves two points ahead of Arsenal going into Gameweek 20 and are hopeful of maintaining their advantage at the top of the table when they face Newcastle United on New Year's Day.
By topping the league at the halfway point in the 2023/24 campaign, they have significantly boosted their chances of winning the title, but Opta believes that the Reds are still not favourites.
Opta have given reigning champions Manchester City the best chance of claiming the Premier League trophy come the end of the season, the Cityzens given a 55.1% chance of finishing first.
While Pep Guardiola's side are five points off Liverpool at present, they do have a game in hand against Brentford to come.
Despite sitting at the summit, Opta give Liverpool just a 27.3% chance of winning the league, while Arsenal are deemed to have just a 15.3% chance following their recent defeat.ย The only other teams technically in the title race are Aston Villa (1.9%) and Tottenham (0.3%).
Opta believe that Liverpool's most likely finish will be second, giving them a 36.3% chance of finishing runners-up, while there is a 24.4% chance of a third-place finish.
According to their calculations, there is only a 2.9% chance of Liverpool ending the season outside the top four, while there is no chance that they finish lower than sixth.
Luckily for Liverpool, their destiny is currently in their own hands, even if they do face an almighty battle to secure a second Premier League crown.
Man City and Arsenal have both shown signs of weakness this season, something Jurgen Klopp's side will be aiming to take advantage of come May.
