Fabrizio Romano names the transfer 'opportunities' Liverpool are looking at in January

Liverpool are not 'desperate' to make January signings, but are attentive to opportunities at centre back, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Despite making a big move in each of the last two winter windows (Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo), the Reds are not expected to be particularly active when it comes to arrivals this month, despite mounting injury concerns.

Speaking back in December, when asked about using the window to source a replacement for the long-term injured Joel Matip, Jurgen Klopp told reporters: "You always talk about transfers like it is the easiest thing in the world. They all cost money, it must be the right player. We still have four centre-backs. Tell me a club which wants to sell a top, top centre-half. Tell me one."

Since then, however, the Reds have also suffered defensive injuries to Kostas Tsimikas and Trent Alexander-Arnold, while Andy Robertson has been out since October.

Addressing speculation that Liverpool could look to make a signing this month, transfer reporter Romano didn't rule out the possibility, but insisted the Reds a 'very happy' with their squad.

He said on the Debrief: “It’s mostly looking quiet for Liverpool at the moment this January. The only thing I heard in the last few weeks was that they were looking at some opportunities at centre-back. Maybe if there are some players available on that position, but they are not desperate to make a signing.

“They are looking at the market, but there is no hurry because I think Liverpool are very happy with their current squad. They usually prefer to focus on the summer transfer window, and I think that will be the same again here, it looks like this will continue to be their strategy.”

Amid the piling injuries, Liverpool recalled 21-year-old Owen Beck from Dundee FC as additional left back cover. Meanwhile, Rhys Williams, Nat Phillips and Calvin Ramsay have all also returned to the club this month. Whether any of that trio are used in the first-team squad for the second half of the season or sent out on loan again remains to be seen.
