Winning the Champions League has to be the aim for Jurgen Klopp's side

Back in August, Liverpool were placed into the Champions League 'group of death'.

Group B was made up of the Reds, Atletico Madrid, Porto and AC Milan. Therefore, most Anfield supporters felt that Liverpool would have to perform well to progress to the knockout stages of Europe's elite competition.

But, the Reds ended up cruising through the Champions League group stages by winning all their matches.

In fact, Liverpool are the first English club to win all six group stage games.

As quoted by This Is Anfield, Klopp said: “Very [proud of the achievement], especially because of the sixth game.

“It’s another chapter in this wonderful group, what we did in the last few years is exceptional.

“Difficult in a hectic schedule to always be on fire, but what the boys did tonight I couldn’t be more proud.”

The Reds will face Inter Milan in the last-16 of the competition. The first leg will take place at the San Siro on Thursday night. The second leg will kick-off on the 8th of March at Anfield.

Inter Milan are having a good season. They are a serious chance of winning the Serie A, as they are one point behind league leaders AC Milan.

Despite that being the case, Liverpool should be confident of defeating Inter Milan across two legs. In fact, the Reds should be confident of claiming the 2022 Champions League trophy.

The Premier League is arguably out of the Reds' reach. League leaders Manchester City are nine points ahead of Liverpool.

Never say never, but there is no denying that Liverpool have a far greater chance of securing the Champions League in comparison to the Premier League.

Former Red Michael Owen is not liked by the majority of Liverpool supporters for obvious reasons, but he did make a good point about why the club are arguably the favourites to win the competition.

“I think English football and the Premier League is so far ahead of everyone else at the moment and getting even stronger,” Owen told BT Sport three months ago, as quoted by The Sport Review.

“We’ve been ahead for a few years anyway and then we’ve taken the two best players in the Italian league in Ronaldo and Lukaku.

“Lionel Messi’s gone to a weaker league [Ligue 1] so the Spanish league has got weaker. I can never really take the French league as seriously as maybe I should.

“We’re taking the best managers as well. I think the biggest dangers to Liverpool are probably Man City and Chelsea.

“You look at the Anfield factor, I just can’t get that out of my head. Good luck going there in the second leg of a European tie. They are almost unbeatable at Anfield.

“You’d have to say that Liverpool are favourites.”

There is a reason why the Anfield crowd is known as the 12th man. Therefore, it would be fair to assume that most sides won't want to play the Reds on Merseyside.

Also, the current Liverpool side have played in two Champions League finals (2018 and 2019). The Reds lost the 2018 final 3-1 to Real Madrid in Kiev.

But, Liverpool bounced back the following season by defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in Madrid to claim their sixth European Cup.

Jurgen Klopp's team has the experience required to go deep into the competition. If Liverpool can keep their star players fit and perform to a reasonable level, then there is absolutely no reason why they can't claim a seventh European Cup.
