Opinion - Liverpool's trip to Old Trafford has come at the right time

After last season, we were fully expecting Liverpool to come flying out of the blocks.

The Reds finished one point behind champions Manchester City on the Premier League table. However, Liverpool have had a poor start to the 2022-23 top-flight campaign.

The Reds have only accumulated two points from a possible six. Jurgen Klopp's side were off the pace against Fulham at Craven Cottage just over a week ago.

We saw an improved performance from the lads against Crystal Palace at Anfield last Monday night. They played with great intent. But, again, Liverpool could not secure the three points.

Klopp's side will face Manchester United at Old Trafford next. As far as we are concerned, the game has come at the right time.

Liverpool and Manchester United are huge rivals. Both clubs have tasted plenty of success over the years, so it's not a real shock as to why they don't get along.

Former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher has made some comments in the past which provide a bit of an insight into what the game means to those associated with it.

As quoted by talkSPORT, he said: “Let’s get this clear: I want United to lose every time they play. I’m pleased when they lose.

“I’m sure United fans feel exactly the same about Liverpool and I wouldn’t change that.”

Ex-Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has also chipped in with his thoughts on the fixture.

“When you manage Liverpool you know the Manchester United job is gone," he said.

Therefore, an intense fixture could kickstart Liverpool's season. The Reds will be angry having not won a top-flight game so far this campaign. This is a team which competed for the quadruple last season.

Also, it is important to note that Manchester United are in terrible form.

Erik ten Hag's side have lost their opening two games of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign. A victory at Old Trafford could just be the boost that Liverpool need.

As far as we are concerned, the Reds have a great chance of winning comfortably. Manchester United are in terrible form.

But, we take more encouragement from what Liverpool did to the Red Devils last season. Klopp's side won 5-0.

We have never seen a Liverpool team win so comfortably at Old Trafford. Even Klopp was surprised with the result.

He told the club's official website the following post-game: "It’s a good day, a really good day and I don’t want to be disrespectful.

"I have no idea, but it’s a big one. We know that. Obviously after the game I got told that never happened in the long history of LFC; this group always wanted to write their own little chapters for the big, big history book of this club.

"This one was a little one tonight, a little chapter. People will talk about it in the future, 100 per cent, because it will not happen very often, if it happens again at all."

It's unlikely that Liverpool will record a 5-0 victory against Manchester United on Monday night. But, Ten Hag's men would not have forgotten about what happened last campaign.

Hopefully Liverpool can kickstart their 2022-23 Premier League season on Monday night. Only time will tell if Liverpool are to find their groove.

We can't wait for the game to come around. There is nothing more entertaining than watching a football match where everything is on the line.
