Opinion: Liverpool have never been stronger under Jurgen Klopp

Back in October 2015, Jurgen Klopp was named the manager of Liverpool Football Club.

Majority of the Anfield faithful felt that Fenway Sports Group had employed the right person. What Klopp did at Borussia Dortmund prior to his arrival at Liverpool was simply amazing.

The Bundesliga club finished in 13th-place on the table the season before the 54-year-old arrived (2008) at the Signal Iduna Park.

Borussia Dortmund were also struggling financially. Despite all those obstacles, Klopp managed to take the club to back-to-back Bundesliga titles between 2010-12.

He also took Borussia Dortmund to the 2013 Champions League final. However, Bayern Munich defeated Klopp's side 2-1 on the night.

But, the German had showed that he had the ability to take a sleeping giant from nowhere to the top. Liverpool were the sleeping giant of English football before Klopp's arrival.

They sat in 10th-place on the Premier League table the day he signed with the club. But, the supporters were confident that Klopp could turn things around because of what he had achieved in the past.

“At this moment all the LFC family is a little bit too nervous, a little bit too pessimistic, a little bit too much in doubt,” the manager told LFC TV when he first signed with the club, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“They all celebrate the game and there is a fantastic atmosphere in the stadium. But, they don’t believe at the moment. They only see five years ago, 10 years ago, 20 years ago.

“History is great, but only to remember. Now we have the possibility to write a new story if we want. But, we have to clear a few things and maybe we can do this and be as successful as we can be.

“I am not saying this year will be the most successful in the history of Liverpool FC. If it happens then we can celebrate it, but if not, we have to work.”

The Reds have been on an upward spiral since that interview. Liverpool have won the UEFA Champions League (2019), UEFA Super Cup (2019), FIFA Club World Cup (2019), Premier League title (2020) and the League Cup (2022) under Klopp.

The scary thing is, this could only be the beginning. As a result of recent arrivals, Liverpool are stronger than ever under Klopp. For the first time during his tenure, there is some strong squad depth.

Klopp possesses two goalkeepers in Alisson and Caoimhin Kelleher.

Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are the German's first-choice centre-backs. But, he does have Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate waiting in the wings.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the only senior right-back at the club. However, the arrival of Kostas Tsimikas back in August 2020 has given Andy Robertson a bit of competition at left-back.

There are plenty of options in midfield. The likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Curtis Jones, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain give Klopp something to think about come matchday.

The signing of Thiago back in the summer of 2020 has given the midfielders a bit more competition, also.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have been the manager's front three for the majority of his time at the club.

But, in the past 18 months, Klopp has added Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz to his attack. Overall, the German is blessed with options.

All the aforementioned players named have helped Liverpool win a major trophy in the past three years, which provides an insight into their quality.

Liverpool have never been this strong during the Premier League era. But, hopefully the current group of players can capitalise. Talent only gets you so far.

They added the League Cup to the club's trophy cabinet last weekend. However, with the talent in the squad, we want to see them build on what they have already achieved.

But, only time will tell if that is to be the case. We wish Klopp and the boys all the best for the remainder of the season.
