Despite leaving for Chelsea, Fernando Torres will always be a Red

They say football is a game of two halves. Well, the same could be said in regards to Fernando Torres' time at Liverpool Football Club.

We are going to take a look back at the good and the bad of the Spaniard's time at Anfield.

The signing of Torres

Back in the summer of 2007, Liverpool signed Torres from Atletico Madrid for a transfer fee of €38 million.

The forward was coming off a solid season with the Spanish club. Torres scored 14 goals in 36 La Liga matches.

So, we knew that we were getting a decent player. We also knew we were getting a player that was desperate to represent the club.

As quoted by The Express, Torres said the following back in 2007: "I'm very happy to be joining the club. It is a fantastic opportunity to be joining one of the best clubs in Europe with a fantastic history."

He added: "You don't get opportunities like this every day of your life.

"When you hear a club like Liverpool is interested in you it is something that fills you with a lot of surprise and a lot of pride."

Liverpool

Torres hit the ground running at Anfield. The forward scored 33 goals in 46 appearances during his first season at the club. You could not stop the man.

Torres went on to prove that he was no one-season wonder. The striker found the back of the net 81 times in 142 appearances for Liverpool.

As you can see in the footage below, Torres was just on another level to everyone else during his time at Anfield.

Chelsea

Unfortunately in modern football, very few players stay loyal. A transfer is always around the corner.

Torres proved to be no different. When Chelsea Football Club came calling for the Spaniard back in January 2011, he made sure he got a transfer out of Liverpool.

The Blues paid the Reds a £50 million transfer fee, which was the British transfer record at the time, to sign Torres.

It is common knowledge that there is a rivalry between Liverpool and Chelsea, so the forward's departure did not go down well with the Anfield faithful.

The reality is, Torres did not win a single trophy during his time as a Red. Chelsea on the other hand were competing for the major honours in the game. So, we could understand why Torres was looking for a way out.

The Spaniard went on to win three trophies with the Blues, including the 2012 Champions League title. But, in doing so, he lost the respect of many Liverpool supporters.

Forgiveness

Back in 2015, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher set up an all-star charity game, which took place at Anfield.

Torres participated in the match. Time had clearly helped some Liverpool supporters heal from Torres' cold departure.

As you can see in the footage here, the Anfield faithful sung the striker's song on the day.

Torres said that he felt at peace hearing his name sung on the Kop.

The 37-year-old posted the following on Instagram after the game: "Thank you Liverpool supporters for everything you gave me in my career, you are just different class. It was a privilege to play in front of you again.

"Today I feel in peace with myself, hearing you singing my name is something I will never forget. From the bottom of my heart thank you very much Liverpool!"

The relationship between the supporters and Torres is clearly strong again.

At Anfield Watch, we have forgiven Torres. His transfer out of Liverpool hurt at the time. But, the Spaniard gave us plenty of good memories.

So, we couldn't stay mad at the forward forever.
