At the backend of January, Liverpool signed winger Luis Diaz from Porto for a transfer fee of £37 million.

Therefore, the Colombia international has been at Anfield for just under a month. With that being the case, we thought that we would take a look at how Diaz has performed in the early stages of his Liverpool career.

Initial thoughts

When Liverpool signed Diaz, we were quite excited. The Reds were getting a player of immense quality.

Diaz had scored 41 goals and registered 19 assists in 125 appearances for Porto's first-team. Also, plenty of people associated with the game had good things to say about him.

Former Colombia international John Diaz said the following about the winger back in 2021.

“Lucho can shoot from distance, he’s comfortable with his two feet, he can dribble, he can open up defences, he can score. What can’t he do? But, believe it or not, he’s yet to reach his ceiling," he told BBC Sport, as quoted by Planet Football.

Diaz made his Liverpool debut against Cardiff City at Anfield. The forward came on as a second-half substitute during the  FA Cup fourth round clash.

Diaz was lively for the 30 minutes that he was on the pitch. In fact, he did create Liverpool's second goal of the match.

As you can see in the footage below (00:49), Diaz pressed and won the ball inside the opposition penalty area.

The forward then played the ball into a central position, which ultimately allowed Takumi Minamino the opportunity to score. The Japan international did not miss. Liverpool defeated Cardiff City 3-1.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp likes his players to work and put the opposition under the pressure. Diaz showed against Cardiff City that he is capable of doing that.

First goal

Diaz has now made five appearances for Liverpool's first-team. The 25-year-old scored his first goal for the club against Norwich City at Anfield last weekend.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson played a world-class ball into the path of Diaz. The Colombia international then dinked the ball over Canaries shot-stopper Angus Gunn. You can view Diaz's first goal for the club in the footage below.

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold was full of praise for Diaz after the Premier League fixture.

As quoted by Tribal Football, the Scouser told the club's official website the following: "He seems like a lad who is hungry to win games, to succeed, to help the team. That's all you can really ask for – someone who is willing to come in and adapt and learn the way that we play and he has shown that so far.

"He understands that it was a huge moment for him to get his goal on the weekend and hopefully that's just the start to be able to push on from that and score a lot more for us."

Diaz's goal helped Liverpool secure a 3-1 victory over Norwich City.

The future

From what we have seen so far, there is a lot to like about Diaz. He can score, create and press. In other words, Diaz looks like a Liverpool player.

The exciting thing about the Colombia international is that he is only 25 years of age. It would be fair to assume that he is far from the finished article.

We only expect Diaz to get better as a result of training and playing alongside the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota.

It is common knowledge that footballers improve if they are surrounded by top-class players. Therefore, we look forward to seeing Diaz improve in the years to come.

We wish the winger all the best for the remainder of the season.
