“Only a huge offer" - Fabrizio Romano's update on Naby Keita's future

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Naby Keita's future.

The Reds signed the midfielder from RB Leipzig for a transfer fee of £54 million back in the summer of 2018.

Keita has struggled with injuries since arriving at Anfield. With that being the case, the Guinea international has only scored 11 goals and registered seven assists in 117 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.

Keita is out of contract at the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign.

However, Romano has confirmed that Liverpool are looking to extend Keita's contract. But, the reporter further added that the midfielder wants to play more regularly.

“I think it is normal that Keita wants to play more regularly at Liverpool. So far, negotiations are not proceeding but do remain ongoing,” Romano told CaughtOffside via his Substack column.

“Jurgen Klopp plans to speak with Keita in the coming days to find a solution. Liverpool plans to keep Keita in case of many injuries in midfield.

“Only a huge offer would change Liverpool’s situation regarding Keita’s future at the club."

Anfield Watch Verdict

Keita is a talented player. The midfielder found the back of the net 17 times and secured 15 assists in 71 appearances for RB Leipzig's first-team.

But, Keita has no real reason to complain about his lack of playing time. The Guinea international has not been able to stay fit to remain in Klopp's starting XI.

In saying that, we believe Keita could be a big player for Liverpool. The midfielder is only 27 years of age, so his career is far from over.

Therefore, hopefully Keita signs a new deal with the club. He just needs to stay fit.
