It’s safe to say Sunday’s 2-2 draw with United felt more like a loss, with Amorim’s side the happier of the two sides, given the form and situations the two clubs find themselves in.

The first half ended goalless, despite both sides having chances to break the deadlock. Cody Gakpo and Alexis Mac Allister missed big opportunities for the hosts, while Rasmus Højlund failed to convert past Alisson minutes before the interval.

It needed a Lisandro Martinez opener to seemingly kick Liverpool into gear with it taking less than twenty minutes for Liverpool to get themselves in front courtesy of Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.

Arne Slot’s side failed to see the game out with Amad Diallo firing home on the 80th minute to share the spoils.

Liverpool were more dangerous than we thought

It’s fair to say Liverpool didn’t perform to their level, but the quality of chances they did create will leave the Reds frustrated with just the one point amid of the performance they put in.

To put it into perspective, according to the xG Philopsophy, Liverpool’s expected goals (xG) was higher on Sunday (3.01) than their infamous 7-0 win against United (2.91) two seasons ago. They were actually more dangerous than what we are potentially giving them credit for.

Mac Allister’s volley recorded an xG of 0.31 whilst Cody Gakpo’s first-half effort recorded an xG of 0.42.

Though xG doesn’t win games of football, the Reds may take encouragement from the fact they’re still creating high-quality chances - and not losing - when not performing to the standards they have set.

Liverpool will hope to return back to winning ways in the Premier League on Tuesday 14th January when they face Nottingham Forest who are the only team to beat the Reds this season.
