Liverpool's Joe Gomez is set to be called up for England for the first time in four years, as Gareth Southgate announces his squad for the March internationals.

Gomez has enjoyed an outstanding season for Liverpool in 2023/24, making 39 appearances in all competitions so far, while impressing with his versatility.

The defender, who is only member of the Reds' first team to pre-date Jurgen Klopp's arrival, has featured in every position across the backline so far this campaign as well as in defensive midfield, amid an unprecedented injury crisis.

According to multiple reports, including Sky Sports, 26-year-old Gomez's versatile displays have earned him a spot in Southgate's England squad, to be announced on Thursday.

England will face Brazil (23 March) and Belgium (26 March) at Wembley during the international break, in what will be the Three Lions' final games before Southgate names his squad for Euro 2024.

Gomez, who is in contention to add his 11 senior caps, last played for England in the 3-0 friendly win over Wales back in November 2020.

Klopp delighted with Gomez story

Previously Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk hailed Gomez as 'one of the players of the season', while Jurgen Klopp has also praised his No. 2's recent resurgence as a utility man.

The manager said: "I am not standing here telling Gareth who he should pick but you can get one player and have four positions covered.

"Wonderful. If you play football at this level, there is [a big] difference between centre-half, full-back, right, left, to the No.6 – and he is capable of that transition in his mind.

"He is one of those stories. What a wonderful player he is and I am so happy he can show that again. In midfield, the game is coming from all angles. Everything changes and he has dealt with it so well, it's crazy. Really good and super-important."

No space for Elliott

Meanwhile, former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is also likely to be included in the soon-to-be announced squad, as a result of his renaissance at Ajax. However, there will seemingly be no place for an in-form midfieler currently at Anfield in Harvey Elliott.

The 20-year-old, who is a regular for the England Under-21s bagged a hat-trick of assists against Sparta Prague last week.

Elliott has also made 39 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool this season and recently passed 100 career outings for the Reds' first team. He is yet to be called up for the England senior team.
