Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has called the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool his lowest point as manager of Manchester United.

Solskjaer's infamous spell at United was brought to an end by a wretched run of form in the autumn of 2021, which included heavy defeats to Leicester and Watford as well as Liverpool.

Liverpool's 5-0 victory over their rivals remains one of the happiest memories of recent times for Reds.

Naby Keita opened the scoring for Jurgen Klopp's side after just five minutes, while the away team were 4-0 up by half-time thanks to a Mohamed Salah double and a strike from Diogo Jota.

Salah completed his hat-trick in the second half, while Paul Pogba was sent off, condemning United to one of their worst home defeats in Premier League history.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Athletic, Solskjaer, who managed United for just under three years, picked out the loss to Liverpool at Old Trafford as his 'lowest point by a mile'.

The Norwegian also name-checked Reds legend Roberto Firmino as the opposition player who gave him the most problems as a coach.

Reflecting on his demise at United, Solksjaer said: "Those City and Liverpool teams were the best that their clubs, with fantastic managers, have ever had. I know that’s a bold statement because Liverpool were so good in the ’80s, but they were a fantastic side under Jurgen Klopp.

"In my last season, we played Liverpool at home. I felt the players were ready for it, just like I’d felt they were ready when we’d gone to City and won. We could have sat back and countered but my decision was to go for it. We lost 5-0. It was 50/50, more or less, in possession and chances at half-time, yet we were 4-0 down.

"I made the wrong decision and that was my lowest point as United manager by a mile. Roberto Firmino was probably the opposition player who caused me the most problems as a manager."

In the interview, Solksjaer also admitted the 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford is one of only a handful of games he has never been able to watch back.

Since that match, Liverpool have also gone on to record 4-0 and 7-0 victories over United.
