Nottingham Forest star highlights injustice every Liverpool fan is wondering about

Morgan Gibbs-White has pointedly compared Manchester United's winner against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night to Virgil van Dijk's disallowed effort in the Carabao Cup final just three days before.

Gibbs-White's Forest fell 1-0 at home to United, after Casemiro headed in an 89th-minute winner from Bruno Fernandes' free kick.

The goal bore a striking similarity to the one chalked off at Wembley just three days before, when Wataru Endo was adjudged to have interfered with play from an offside position in the build-up to Van Dijk's header.

VAR ruled that Endo, who was offside when the free kick was taken, had blocked the run of Chelsea's Levi Colwill — a decision that received criticism from fans, pundits and even ex-referees.

While the Liverpool goal was ruled out by Chris Kavanagh after going to the monitors for a second look on Sunday, the same referee proceeded to award a goal for United, despite a potential interference involving Raphael Varane.

The French defender, also offside when the ball was played, appeared to block the run of Forest's Felipe, who even went to ground. However, after a lengthy VAR check, the goal was given as Varane was ruled not have blocked a player who could've got involved in the play.

The similarities of the incidents were not lost on Gibbs-White.

In a now deleted Instagram post, the midfielder compared the two goals, circling both Endo and Varane in an apparent criticism of the decision against his side.

Speaking after the game, Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo chose not to dwell on the incident.

He said: "This was a competition we had expectations. Now is not the moment to regret it. The boys gave everything and they played good football. They [VAR] were checking a possible offside from the block. It's over. We had so many situations with Brentford and VAR.

"Let's forget about it and focus on what we can control. We have to keep on going. We have to improve a lot of things. We played good today. We defended well. We were organised. We fought. We all had the dream for the FA Cup. Now it’s over. We’ll try again next time."

With both Liverpool and United winning on Wednesday night, the two rivals will now meet in the FA Cup quarter-finals at Old Trafford on March 16.
