"Not the worst decision” - Timo Werner on joining Chelsea over Liverpool

Timo Werner has talked about nearly joining Liverpool before he signed for Chelsea.

Speaking about Klopp ahead of the FA Cup final, as cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, Werner said that Klopp's personality is what makes German people love him.

"He is one of the best coaches we had in Germany," said Werner. "Not to attack our manager, but over the past years he won the most titles. He has a very nice personality — a personality that the German people love, because he seems like fun.

"The Germans love the types like Thomas Muller, Jurgen Klopp — they have empathy. They say what they think, and that is really important in this business, to not fake something."

Werner also spoke about the possibility of joining Klopp on Merseyside before he joined Chelsea in 2020.

“When I was in Leipzig, I had the possibility to come to the Premier League," Werner said. "Liverpool were also in my thoughts and were a big possibility for me, but at the end I decided for Chelsea and I won the Champions League title last year. It was not the worst decision.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

At the time, it seemed like we made a massive mistake not signing Werner. However, after only scoring 23 goals in 89 games for Chelsea, the Reds might've dodged a bullet.

Saying that I do think that if Timo joined Liverpool he would've become a much better player than he is currently at Chelsea.

Klopp's system suited him to the ground and he was the number nine that we desperately needed at the time.

However, since then we've signed Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz and I definitely wouldn't swap either of them for Werner.

Another congratulations is in order for Michael Edwards and his transfer team for not rushing into a deal and waiting for the correct players.
