Liverpool's Calvin Ramsay endures nightmare loan spell

Calvin Ramsay is enduring a nightmare loan spell away from Liverpool this season. Preston North End boss Ryan Lowe explained why.
Calvin Ramsay left Liverpool this summer to spend the season on loan at Preston North End. It was supposed to be an invaluable experience and game time for the youngster, who barely featured across the 2022/23 campaign.
But things have not gone to plan. Ramsay almost immediately picked up a knee injury, ruling him out for four months. He's now recovering from Covid - and that's kept him out of the squad recently.
Overall, it means Ramsay has played just twice this season. The first was as a half-time substitute in a 4-0 thrashing by Middlesbrough to end November. That was followed by his sole start - 87 minutes as Preston lost 2-0 to Queen's Park Rangers.
Ramsay has since dropped out of the squad, though, and doesn't appear to be near the plans of manager Ryan Lowe. The PNE boss has moved to explain the situation this week - and it sounds like it's a case of patience.
"He is available," Lowe said, per the Lancashire Evening Post. "He's just out of the squad at the moment, because he had Covid.
"He's fit and training every day, but I have got to look for players who I feel can help - coming off the bench. I want more attacking players and we've got Ali [McCann] or [Alan Browne] who can fill that right-wing-back void - or even Liam Millar, swapping over to the other side.
"We don't need an extra one on the bench at the moment. So yeah, he's fit and available and he's just got to wait for his turn. When it comes, hopefully, he can take it."
Ramsay will need to wait his turn, then. While he may be prepared to do that - or simply have little choice in the matter - it's not a situation that will please Liverpool.
They bought the Scot in 2022 as one of the brightest young full-back prospects in Britain. Injuries kept him out of the overall plan nearly all season, though, and this campaign was supposed to be where he gets back on track.
It's moving increasingly close to another lost year, however. Will Liverpool try to act next month? It's possible - but maybe they'll back Ramsay to force his way into the side and call it a learning experience.
Something has to change, though, or the Scot is going to be far, far behind in his development.
