Nico Williams contract renewal at Athletic Club is far from a done deal, with the Liverpool-linked star's agent adding pressure to the situation with his latest comments.

The 21-year-old forward joined the Bilbao club aged 11 and has become one of Spanish football's most exciting talents in recent years.

The ten-cap Spain forward has a goal and five assists from the wings so far in 2023/24, with Athletic Club sitting fifth in La Liga going into the international break.

With his current contract due to expire at the end of the season, Williams' future has been the source of much discussion, with Liverpool supposedly among those interested.

Reports in Spain claim that the Reds are one of the clubs to have 'asked about' Williams.

Barcelona have also been linked, while Williams turned down a move to Aston Villa over the summer.

Now, the young star's agent has fanned the flames of speculation by insisting that there is 'no definitive offer' when it comes to a contract renewal at Athletic Club.

Félix Tainta told El Correo. "Let's not forget that the contract ends in a few months.

"There is no definitive offer from the club or the player ... The player should decide his future.

Shutting down rumours that an agreement has been reached between player and club, Tainta added: "If we talk about a definitive offer or apply pressure, we're on the wrong track. I don't know who can leak that and what purpose it serves, but if that's the case, I would say they are wrong... The club knows what the player's plan is, what he wants. There is no definitive offer from either party."

Anfield Watch's own Danny Corcoran made the case for Williams as a potential future Mohamed Salah successor at Liverpool back in the summer, writing: "Where the Pamplona-born forward thrives is in one against ones and progressing the ball up the pitch through his dribbling.

"He ranks in the 95th percentile for progressive carries per 90 (5.9) and the 92nd percentile for successful take ons per 90 (2.81). He does this through his frightening pace and the ability to use both feet."

Nico is not the only member of the Williams family to have been linked with Liverpool. His older brother, Iñaki, supposedly once turned down a move to Anfield back in 2019.

“I had an option to leave,” the older Williams told AS, when asked about Liverpool's interest. “It’s nice that clubs like this try to get you, but I was always clear that I want to be at Athletic.”
