Next Liverpool manager: Reds consider two Serie A bosses

Liverpool are considering two Serie A bosses as their next manager, according to reports. The Reds won’t be getting Xabi Alonso.

The Athletic reports that two Serie A managers are on Liverpool's shortlist and have been discussed at the club. This comes as everyone on that list essentially moved up a place as Xabi Alonso removed himself from contention.

It leaves Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim as the favourite - though, Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi is another key contender.

But it seems two Serie A managers are also on this list. The first is Inter's Simone Inzaghi, who is considered an 'outsider' for the job.

The other is Thiago Motta. His work at Bologna has seen them shoot up the Serie A table and compete for the UEFA Champions League spots.

Now, neither are at the forefront of Liverpool's shortlist but the pair have been discussed. There's a long way to go but depending how things work out, they appear to have slim chances of taking the Anfield job.

Liverpool consider Simone Inzaghi and Thiago Motta

It's a little strange that Inzaghi hasn't been tipped for other jobs, given there are a few elite clubs looking for new managers right now. Of course, he's at one of the world's biggest in Inter - but their financial situation hamstrings them a little in ambition.

The report mentions that Inzaghi doesn't speak English, though, and that could ultimately be the reason Liverpool only see him as an outsider. If he was fluent - as Alonso and Ruben Amorim are - then perhaps the Reds would take a stronger stance on the Italian.

As for Motta, he's an incredibly interesting candidate. He hasn't won anything, which certainly puts him at a disadvantage against Amorim, but the fact the Serie A table reads "Inter, Milan, Juventus, Bologna, Roma, Atalanta, Napoli" right now is remarkable.

Bologna haven't finished above ninth (their finish under Motta's first half-campaign last season) since 2002 when they came 7th. And that's their joint-highest finish since 1968. To potentially have them in the Champions League would be a truly extraordinary achievement.

Again, it doesn't exactly sound like Motta is on the brink of getting the job. If he can get Bologna into the Champions League, though, he'll find himself pretty high on the shortlist.
