Nagelsmann U-turn could impact Liverpool search and Klopp future

Julian Nagelsmann has signed a shock new deal to remain in charge of Germany beyond the European Championship this summer.

Nagelsmann, 36, inked a short-term deal to replace Hansi Flick as national team coach last September which carried on until Euro 2024.

It had widely been expected that the former Bayern Munich manager would seek a return to the club game following the international tournament with some of Europe’s top clubs now seeking a new boss.

Bayern, Barcelona and Liverpool are among the teams who were linked with Nagelsmann’s signature but any club side looking for his services will now have to turn elsewhere following Friday’s news.

Nagelsmann was sacked by FC Hollywood last March with Thomas Tuchel coming in to replace him.

The ex-Chelsea boss only just managed to get over the line in the Bundesliga, fending off Borussia Dortmund on the final day of the season, but will leave his post at the end of the current campaign.

Bayern, like Liverpool, had been keen on adding Xabi Alonso as head coach but were left devastated by the Spaniard’s decision to stay on with the Bundesliga winners

Fan sentiment turned towards Nagelsmann in recent weeks, with the coach having overseen an upturn in form for the Nationalmannschaft.

He led Germany to recent victories over France and the Netherlands, meaning they will head into their home tournament among the favourites.

Nagelsmann decision could affect Liverpool and Klopp

This decision could also have repercussions on the future of Jurgen Klopp, who is set to depart Anfield after nine years in charge.

It had been speculated this week that the 56-year-old could replace Nagelsmann in 2025, after a year off, with assistant manager Sandro Wagner stepping up to the main role until Klopp is ready for a comeback.

However, the renewal all but rules Klopp out of the running, until after the 2026 World Cup at least.

One more candidate, therefore, has been crossed off Liverpool’s list of potential replacements with Ruben Amorim remaining the clear favourite to succeed Klopp
