Newcastle vs Liverpool: Player ratings as Salah and Trent lead fight back
Liverpool faced Newcastle away from home in the Premier League with several first-team players out.
The league leaders were without the likes of Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, Ibrahima Konate and others while Trent Alexander-Arnold was initially rested on the bench.
Here are our player ratings:
Caoimhin Kelleher: 5 -
The game will be remembered for his late error leading to Schar's goal sadly. But he had made some crucial saves before that.
Jarell Quansah: 5 -
It was always going to be a tough test for Quansah coming up against Anthony Gordon. Contributed poorly for the second goal and perhaps should have given away a penalty on Isak. Booked.
Joe Gomez: 4 -
Really struggled. There were a few times Newcastle found their way in behind, including one awkward failed clearance from which Anthony Gordon should have scored. Turned inside out by Gordon for the second.
Virgil van Dijk: 6 -
He was twisted this way and that in the build-up to Alexander Isak's opening goal in uncharacteristic fashion. Other than that he was solid.
Andy Robertson: 6 -
Made plenty of forward runs to aid the attack but there were times when he looked a little vulnerable in defensive situations.
Ryan Gravenberch: 5 -
Not his best game. Looked a little bit jaded which is understandable considering the amount of minutes he has played. Booked.
Alexis Mac Allister: 6 -
A solid performance tainted by his yellow card which now rules him out of the Merseyside derby at the weekend. Had a couple of decent shots and got the Reds going for the Jones goal.
Curtis Jones: 7 -
Making a habit of arriving in the box and finishing, following his debut England goal last month. Gave Liverpool JUST what they needed after half-time and was close to adding a second.
Cody Gakpo: 6 -
Probably the most active attacker for Liverpool before half-time. Made what should have been an incredible assist for Nunez, who missed from practically on the line.
Mohamed Salah: 9 -
Where would Liverpool be without him? Another two goals and another assist. Created the equaliser for Jones and scored off TWO Trent Alexander-Arnold assists. Could have had a hat-trick.
Darwin Nunez: 5 -
Somehow missed from under the crossbar and inside the six-yard box. Provided plenty of hustle and bustle up top. Booked.
Subs:
Trent Alexander-Arnold: 9 -
Instant impact with an assist for Salah and followed it up with one more. Incredible attacking performance.
Dominik Szoboszlai: 7 -
Contributed in the build-up to Salah's goals, exchanging passes for the first and another stepover ahead of the second.
Luis Diaz: 6 -
Came on down the left flank.
