New Liverpool manager: Arne Slot names his THREE favourite Premier League teams
It seems Liverpool fans can look forward to an exciting brand of football under incoming head coach Arne Slot after a resurfaced interview shone an interesting light on his philosophy.
When asked last May about his favourite teams to watch by Voetbal International, Slot omitted Liverpool.
Instead the Dutchman said: "There is no team in the world I would rather watch than Manchester City, followed by Napoli, Arsenal and Brighton."
Guardiola comparisons
The fact that the Feyenoord coach didn't even name Liverpool among his top three Premier League teams to watch would suggest the club is set to take a different direction under Slot.
As evidenced by his preference for the brand of football played by Manchester City, the 45-year-old's philosophy mirrors that of Pep Guardiola, with an emphasis on proactive football, which he successfully implemented at Feyenoord.
"I certainly don't want to compare myself to Pep, but he is a control freak just like me," he said.
"But City - and again, it is not my intention to compare us with them - have a similar style of play to how we want to play with Feyenoord."
A goodbye to 'heavy metal' football?
With Slot's clear admiration for Guardiola and the football played by his so-called disciples, Arsenal's Mikel Arteta and Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi, it may be fair to say that Slot's appointment as Liverpool manager will signal a farewell to the 'heavy metal' football favoured by current manager Jurgen Klopp.
While there are many similarities between the styles, including a preference for a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, Slot's style prioritises patient build-up from the back, short passing and the deployment of two wingers high up the pitch.
It was Liverpool's data-driven and methodical approach in seeking Klopp's successor that ultimately led them to choose Slot over other contenders, including Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim.
Clearly, Michael Edwards and his team feel that the transition between the styles of play can be smooth, especially with the help of Slot's famed communication.
